Automotive Door Lock Repair There are a variety of things that could be wrong with your power door locks. Automotive locksmiths are able to handle many of these problems regularly. If your vehicle's power locks are not working, or make a buzzing or'machine gun' sound when you lock or unlock them you're dealing with a dying actuator. Replacing the actuator is simple, but the process varies between different brands and models. Broken or damaged lock the cylinder A broken lock cylinder is an aggravating situation, particularly when you're trying to get into your car following an attempted break-in. However, locksmiths will usually be able to repair the cylinder in a short time and at a low cost. A locksmith can also replace the damaged door lock actuator, which is a small motor that moves the lock cylinder to open or close the door. The lock cylinder is similar to the lock mechanism found on your household doors When you insert a key, it presses down on a series of spring-loaded pins, aligning them with a shear line allowing you to turn the cylinder to open or close the door. Use a screwdriver, awl or a pick to release the lock-cylinder tab for retaining. Then, pull the lock-cylinder straight out. If your new mechanical key doesn't turn the ignition cylinder, try spraying WD40 on the cylinder for ignition lock and jiggling the key. If this isn't working, try bumping the cylinder. Bumping a lock's cylinder can sometimes remove misaligned or displaced wafers that prevent the lock from turning. Broken or damaged keys If your car key breaks or is damaged, it may cause more trouble than an easy lockout. It is important to always have a spare key. If you do not have a spare, try not to be in a panic. It might be simpler than you think to repair your broken car key. Check the battery and circuit boards first. If they're in good condition the grooves on the key might have gotten worn down. This can cause your key to get stuck in the ignition, or not turn at all. Locksmiths can usually fix this by sanding down the grooves to make them match the mechanism. Keys that are older are more prone than newer keys to break because of the repeated strain caused by being placed into the lock and turning it.
